Primarily info to Boor (but don't know account name of him)
Haver been checking up GFX drivers for Aspire 5920. The one on acer's supportpage seems a bit outdated itself so I wonder if it is enough.
V7.14.10.1409 2008-12-03 (http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/VGA/VGA_Intel_7.14.10.1409_Vistax86.zip?acerid=6336390 38013412010&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire 5920&OS=V10&LC=en&SC=EMEA_27) This is the ATI version for 5920
I do understand your problem about using ATI's catalyst driver since their page is quite confusing. I found in a discussion that the Mobility Radeon HD 3470 should use only drivers from the laptop manufacturer. There are even some notes about the card being recognized as a total different one if the Catalyst is used.
Even if you have the above version in your system, I would try to remove it and resinstall it again. Download the above driver. Uninstall you current driver and any catalyst version and tell Vista to use standard driver instead (desktop will look crappy). If vista tries to reinstall, abort it. Install the downloaded driver.
If the problem continues maybe the windowslogfile could give a hint of what is going on.
I hope this can be of use for you.
