I asked the question in the Virtues Guide, "what is a Tactical effect?" Nobody's ever tried to answer it. Since I've had a sneak peek at Rhy's forthcoming Warden guide, where he nominates Tolerance (strong buff: Tactical Vulnerability) as a must-have, I thought it might as well get its own thread.

From a player point-of-view, I know what a tactical attack is - most of the LMs armoury, for a start. I know that Blinding Flash is a Physical, most of the Minstrels attacks are resisted by Cry (& mitigated by Light), along with the various CPT / GDN / WDN / CHM shouts. But when a mob attacks us... What's a tactical attack? Who do we need Shadow Mitigation against? Those goblin guards in Moria who do the stuns - is that resistable? What improves our defence against them? And so on & so forth.

We have 4 Resistances - poison, wound, fear, disease - & attacks of those nature are nice & obvious with a prettty coloured border on the debuff icon. We have 5 Mitigations on our traits - AV, Melee & Ranged are, again, all obvious enough & there's not much point in posting examples. Tactical & Shadow attacks, though? What attacks from what mobs (the emphasis being on MoM mobs, since that's where most of us are spending most of our time these days) are we on the receiving end of?

My own gut feeling is that, apart from the occasional shade & the Nameless down in the Shadowed Refuge, we're facing very little Shadow damage nowadays (which means Fidelity could be replaced). So please, post queries or information. If you "think, but aren't certain" fine, post that too - it can be discussed.

Basic logic would dictate that anything not literally stomping you on the face with an axe, or firing arrows or stingers in your gut, would be tactical.

Disclaimer
Turbine and logic are not natural bedfellows. In fact, they are separated by a few streets usually. The information in this post might be completely logical, but completely wrong.

Agreed, very little in the way of shadow damage (although i think one of the instances is an exception to this and worth bringing fidelity for), seems fire and acid mitigation and the way to go in general. As for tactical damage, easiest way to tell is to get a burglar to fight some enemies with touch and go on, if you get beaten to death quickly (ie, grims spring to mind) then the damage is tactical.

Minstrels attacks are resisted by Cry (& mitigated by Light

I know this is about the mobs...but to clarify that the resistance for minstrel attacks in War Speach is Cry and they do light damage....however they are classed as Tactical and if I do my "tactical" damage buff they do more damage....

Therefore I would agree with others that if it's not melee or ranged it must be tactical.

One example of this would be the "void drain" or whatever it's called that the boss in the DD does.

Well i think thorog's shadow ball comes under the 'splat' catagory. You do not resist splat attacks, you get splatted ;)
